After a nail-biting match, the Oxford Landing-sponsored Oxford University team came out on top over Peter Lehmann's Edinburgh in the finals of the University Wine Champions competition and will be heading out to Australia in April this year.
Team Captain James Flewellen said it was the toughest, the closest and the most nerve-wracking match of the competition. The teams were so close that it all came down to the final blind tasting challenge.
Simon Thorpe MW, Managing Director at Negociants UK, who sponsored the Oxford team, said:
'This has been a fantastic initiative and great fun to be involved. It was a stellar performance from the Oxford Landing / Oxford team and full credit to Edinburgh too. I've been seriously impressed by the level of wine knowledge, tenacity and commitment. The team in Australia look forward to welcoming James, George and Ren to Oxford Landing ... and a BBQ on the mighty Murray to celebrate!'
The inaugural A+ Australian Wine University Wine Champions held the gripping grand final at the Australia Day Tastings at London’s Saatchi Gallery. The competition saw eight teams of students from universities across the UK pitting their wits against each other in a series of quizzes and tastings about the world of Australian wine, to eventually win a 14 day trip of a lifetime to the vineyards and wineries of Australia.
