| At Oxford Landing red loam soil over a limestone base ensures vegetative growth is moderate and fruit exposure is good. Shallow soils which readily dry out enable the practise of regulated deficit irrigation. Small parcels of fruit were selected from the oldest low yielding blocks of Shiraz grown at Oxford Landing, with 40 year old vines grown on a wide T-trellis being the predominant source for this Oxford Landing Shiraz. Warm dry conditions during January and February 2001 kept berry size small allowing fruit to be concentrated in flavour and colour. The Oxford Landing Shiraz 2001 is a medium bodied wine that shows an intense crimson red colour with bright purple hue. The aroma is of red cherries and cloves with a subtle oak influence. Flavours of ripe red berry fruits and stewed plums on the palate are made more complex by mocha chocolate characters and a mid-palate sweetness. Oxford Landing FactVine husbandry is vital in creating microclimates in the vineyard to achieve the perfect balance of light, shade and coolness. Each of these microclimates is managed meticulously to ensure the fruit develops a unique flavour profile to enhance depth and complexity in the final wine. |
